The Amarillo Sandies have taken over sole possession of first place in the District 3-5A boys basketball race.

The Sandies won a big showdown with Caprock 56-48 on Tuesday. Nathan Betts scored 23 points and Jake Lambert added 16 as Amarillo High improved to 6-0 in district play. The Longhorns Chris Wilson led all scorers with 24 but it wasn’t enough as the Longhorns fall to 5-1.

In other boys’ games, Palo Duro rolled past Plainview 93-64, Randall won big at Dumas 63-30 and Hereford knocked off Canyon 61-52.

In girls’ games, 5th ranked Amarillo High pulled away from Caprock in the 4th quarter for a 47-26 win. The win sets up a huge showdown with Canyon on Friday. The 2nd ranked Lady Eagles lead the district at 8-0 after beating Hereford 74-31.

Randall girls won at Dumas 69-34 and Palo Duro won a thriller at home over Plainview 42-41.

In 2-6A, Tascosa girls suffered their first district loss, dropping a 69-66 double overtime decision to Frenship. The Rebels boys team had no such trouble, winning 66-34 to stay tied for the district lead with Permian. Tascosa plays at Odessa Permian on Friday.

Bushland girls won over Perryton 56-35. The Falcons dropped the boys’ game 52-41.

Highland Park girls lost to Tulia 49-48, and Tulia also won the boys’ game 66-46.

River Road girls fell to Spearman 51-46, and the River Road boys lost to Spearman 71-46.
