Another Tesla Model S Electric Car Catches Fire

DETROIT (AP) — Another Tesla Model S electric car has caught fire, this time in Tennessee, and company shares are falling.

Tesla says the fire happened Wednesday afternoon near Smyrna. The company says it was caused by a crash and was not spontaneous.

Spokeswoman Liz Jarvis Shean says Tesla has sent a team to Tennessee to investigate the fire. She says the company has been in contact with the driver, who believes the car saved his life.

The fire burned the front of the car, according to pictures posted on the Jalopnik.com and Valuewalk.com websites.

Two other Model S cars have caught fire in the past five weeks, one near Seattle and the other in Mexico.

Shares of the carmaker, based in Palo Alto, Calif., fell almost 5 percent, or $7.01, to $144.15.
