1907 — Mordecai ‘Three Finger’ Brown of the Cubs pitched a seven-hit shutout as Chicago beat the Detroit Tigers, 2-0, at Bennett Park in Detroit to win the World Series. (More info.)

1920 — Man o’ War beat Sir Barton, the 1919 Triple Crown winner, by seven lengths in a match race at Kenilworth Park in Ontario. (More info.)

1929 — Thanks in part to Hack Wilson losing Mule Haas’ fly ball in the sun for an inside-the-park home run, the Chicago Cubs squandered an eight-run, seventh inning lead and lost 10-8 to the Philadelphia Athletics in Game 4 of the World Series at Shibe Park. (More info.)

1967 — The St. Louis Cardinals beat the Boston Red Sox, 7-2, at Fenway Park in the seventh and deciding game of the World Series. (More info.)

1968 — The Summer Olympics opened in Mexico City, Mexico. (More info.)

1986 — Dave Henderson of the Boston Red Sox hit a go-ahead two-run home run off Donnie Moore of the California Angels in the bottom of the ninth inning of Game 5 of the American League Championship Series at Anaheim. The Red Sox won, 7-6, in 11 innings. (More info.)

1992 — Art Monk of the Washington Redskins set an NFL record with his 820th career reception, passing former Seattle Seahawk Steve Largent. (More info.)
