Here are just some of the notable sports moments that happened on October 31:

1925 — Red Grange ran for 363 yards and three touchdowns, as Illinois beat Pennsylvania, 24-2, at Franklin Field in Philadelphia. (More info.)

1950 — Former West Virginia State University basketball player Earl Lloyd became the first black player to appear in an NBA game, debuting with the Washington Capitols. (More info.)

1986 — Julius (Dr. J.) Erving of the Philadelphia 76ers announced he would retire at the end of the season. (More info.)

2001 — Tino Martinez of the New York Yankees hit a two-out home run off Arizona Diamondbacks’ closer Byung-Hyun Kim to tie the score at 3-3, and teammate Derek Jeter hit a solo home run in the 10th to win Game 4 of the World Series. (More info.)

2009 — In the first-ever use of replay in a World Series game, umpires determined that Alex Rodriguez of the New York Yankees hit a home run that caromed off a television camera stationed near the right field fence of Citizens Banks Park in Game 3 of the Fall Classic against the Philadelphia Phillies.
