Texas Bay Oil Spill Cleanup Almost Complete
TEXAS CITY, Texas (AP) — Cleanup from last month's oil spill in the Houston Ship Channel could wrap up within days as officials try to determine blame for the barge and ship collision.
The Galveston County Daily News (http://bit.ly/1retxmc ) reported Tuesday that U.S. Coast Guard officials expect cleanup efforts to end this week.
The March 22 accident near Texas City dumped nearly 170,000 gallons of oil from the barge into the water. The stream of heavy fuel oil extended into the Gulf of Mexico and then southward along the Texas coast.
Seawolf Park and East Beach in Galveston reopened last week, as well as the last 2 miles of the Texas City dike. All were closed during cleanup that continues south of Matagorda Island.
Coast Guard officials did not immediately return a message Tuesday.
