UNITED NATIONS (AP) — Russia has introduced a resolution in the U.N. General Assembly calling for a traditional, symbolic truce around the period of the Winter Olympics and Paralympic games in Sochi.

The resolution was expected to pass by acclamation later Wednesday.

The resolution calls for all countries to observe a truce from a week before the games until a week after they close "to encourage a peaceful environment and ensure safe passage, access and participation for athletes and relevant persons at the Games." The Olympics are from Feb. 7-23; the Paralympics are from March 7-16.

The resolution designated April 6 as the International Day of sports and peace.

Similar resolutions have had little impact on world conflicts during past Olympics. Russia and Georgia fought over South Ossetia during the summer Olympics of 2008.
