Breaking up is hard to do, especially when there are four-legged creatures suffering in the aftermath.

What happens to pets when couples split? Well, one of the new trends is called "pup nups," in which couples specify who gets their dog when they go their separate ways.

It seems like this trend makes sense, since one study suggests there's been a 25% jump in the amount of divorces where pet custody is one of the sticking points. How to combat that? Make an agreement while you're still with your partner, so it's clearly outlined should the day come you break up with no agreement over who should keep the dog.

Of course, since dogs are considered property, no one asks the pooch what he wants. Poor little fella.
