Mayor Paul Harpole has given Amarillo residents a basic ultimatum, either conserve water voluntarily or it will be mandated. The mayor has said we have two weeks to come in under 74 million gallons of water used.

The results are in and the data is a little cloudy. We have consumed about 73.7 million gallons, just under the goal presented by the mayor. The goal set by the mayor is still 6 - 7 million gallons above the average normal for this time of year.

"We're not entirely satisfied with our water savings," Harpole said. "We have refilled our (500-million-gallon reserve) reservoir."

It looks like for the mean time, water conservation efforts will still remain voluntary.
