Chilean Doctors successfully separated two 10 month old conjoined twins after an 18 hour surgery. The surgery was followed widely by South American television and the internet.

Twins Maria Paz and Maria Jose are resting in critical condition in ICU after the grueling surgery. They lost a lot of blood, but are said to be in good condition at Luis Calvo Mackenna Hospital.

The twins were separated at the thorax, stomach and pelvis. This was the seventh, and by far the most complex surgery the girls had undergone at this point. Parents Jessica Navarrete and Roberto Paredes held a vigil for the girls at the hospital for the entire procedure.

"Both were successfully separated," Ossandon said at a news conference. "We had a number of difficulties during the surgery, there were some surprises, but we were able to fix, solve the problems."

The doctor said they came through the surgery in good condition, but didn't rule out further complications from anesthesia and infection.
