Michele Bachmann Wins Iowa Straw Poll; Tim Pawlenty Ends His Presidential Candidacy

GOP presidential candidate and Tea Party darling Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann, won her first victory of the campaign season at Saturday’s Ames Straw Poll in Iowa.

Out of 16,892 votes cast, she claimed 4,823 of them, narrowly edging out second-place finisher, Texas Rep. Ron Paul, by only 152 votes.

Texas Governor Rick Perry Will ‘Make Clear’ He’s Running for President

Texas Governor Rick Perry, who has yet to formally announce his candidacy for the GOP presidential nomination, is certainly acting like he’s in the running. Two associates have said he will visit the early-voting states South Carolina and New Hampshire on Saturday.

Perry will give a speech in South Carolina “to make clear that he’s running for president” before then heading to a house party in New Hampshire at the home of state representative, Pamela Tucker, who has been encouraging Perry to run.

An unprecedented wave of drug patent expirations in the next year will usher in generics that will dramatically reduce the prices of some of world’s best-selling medications, including cholesterol drug Lipitor and blood thinner Plavix. Other drugs used to treat conditions such as asthma, diabetes, HIV and depression will also be affected.

“My estimation is at least 15 percent of the population is currently using one of the drugs whose patents will expire in 2011 or 2012,” says Joel Owerbach, chief pharmacy officer for Excellus Blue Cross Blue Shield, which serves most of upstate New York.
