Asthma sufferers are growing in Amarillo. In actuality, the growth of asthma sufferers is outpacing the state and the country. While asthma can not be cured, it can be managed and the symptoms can be held to a minimum.

A 2010 study showed that out of 600 people surveyed, 13% of those suffered from asthma. In contrast, the state of Texas shows that 6% of people suffer from asthma.

“Amarillo is trending up, and the trend is outpacing the nation and state,” said Matt Richardson, Amarillo’s public health director. “We have a growing asthma problem in Amarillo.”

There are usually four factors that cause an asthma attack: genetics, allergies, respiratory infections or environmental factors. Amarillo's climate can lend towards allergies due to the dry and windy climate.
