The 4th of July holiday is just around the corner.  You can now find fireworks stands on the corner of every major street outside the city limits.  However when it comes to fireworks, they are still illegal to possess and fire inside the city limits.

The city ordinance that prohibits the possession, manufacture, storage, sale, handling and use of any firework within the city limits.  Fines for violations are up to $2,000 for each occurrence.

In 2014 the Amarillo Police Department issued 22 citations for fireworks violations.

If you have fireworks that you need to dispose of then the City of Amarillo offers the “Fireworks Amnesty Program."   This is a way to dispose of fireworks, small arms ammunition, primers, powder and propellents.  Just call the 24 hour voice mail at 806-378-9092 and provide your name, number and an address.  A officer will then contact you to schedule a pick up.  All items that are surrendered with be properly disposed of by and according to the City of Amarillo Fire Code and agency policy and procedures.
