McKINNEY, Texas (AP) — A North Texas man has been sentenced to life in prison over the 2011 fatal beating of his toddler son less than a month after adopting the boy.

Scott Garrett of Frisco was sentenced Thursday after being convicted of capital murder.

Prosecutors in McKinney did not seek the death penalty so Garrett received an automatic life prison term without parole in the death of his 22-month-old son, Logan.

The Dallas Morning News (http://bit.ly/1mnhDGt ) reports the victim and his twin sister, Olivia, were adopted by Garrett and his wife in late September 2011. Garrett's wife was out of town on Oct. 11, 2011, when the boy was fatally injured.

An autopsy determined Logan suffered blunt force trauma to the abdomen.

The victim's sister has since by adopted by another family.
