Amarillo ISD is getting its own bakery.

In 2014 the USDA will require schools include whole grains in every product fed to students.  To help meet that goal, Amarillo ISD is opening a central bakery that will serve fresh bread products to all 53 schools.

The bakery is not the only change.  There will soon be a greater emphasis on in-house production and recipes.

AISD estimates the bakery could save the district $45,000 per year while also adding five jobs at the bakery.  The bakery is scheduled to open in January.
