Wild Fire

Fire crews mopped up hot spots left over from wild fires as the sun rose today. Concerned families were still barred from returning to communities that were hardest-hit by the fires.

Mesilla Park, in Potter County, Palisades and Lake Tanglewood, in Randall County remained off limits to residents as firefighters mopped up hot spots early this morning.

Amarillo Fire Capt. Wes Hall said the Department of Public Safety flew him over the scenes of several wildfires late Sunday night as the wind shifted from the south to the north.

“The wind shift really helped a lot,” Hall said this morning.

Hall said the wind seemed to help bring the fires under control, but he added that emergency workers would not be able to assess the damages until daylight today.
