Is Kindergarten Too Young For Sex Education? [POLL]

The sex question!  When is the right time to talk to your kids about sex?  12? 10?  How about kindergarten?  Well that is exactly what is going to be happening in Chicago public schools.

Back when I was in school, we were taught the basics of sex ed in junior high.  Then, in high school, we got a more detailed version.  But never in my life would I imagine sex ed being taught to kindergarteners.  Over the next two years, Chicago public schools will overhaul their sexual health program, which means a set amount of time will be spent on sex education in every grade, beginning in kindergarten.

Yes, you read that right.  Our little 5 and 6 year olds will be taught sex ed.  What has our world come to?  I understand that kids are learning about it at a younger and younger age, but 5 and 6?

Growing up, my mom was very open with us.  If we had any questions all we had to do was ask.  Even with the information being available, I never would have asked her about sex that early.

The Chicago Kindergarteners will learn the basics about anatomy, reproduction, healthy relationships and personal safety.  From 1st to 3rd grade, students will learn about family, feelings and appropriate and inappropriate touching.  Fourth graders will learn about puberty and HIV.  Then from 5th grade on, students will be taught reproduction, the transmission and prevention of HIV/AIDS, and other sexually-transmitted diseases, bullying and contraception, including abstinence.

It seems like a pretty thought out lesson plan, but still I don't know if I'd want my kindergartener to be taught all this from someone other than myself.  It is a parent's job to teach their kids all this information.  What do you think?
