Temperatures will be record-breaking across the Texas panhandle over the next couple of days. A Heat Advisory has been issued for many counties in the panhandle including the city of Amarillo, as temperatures are expected over 100 through the weekend. Down in Palo Duro Canyon, the weather service has issued an Excessive Heat Warning, meaning temperatures could reach upwards of 110. Unfortunately, there will be only very slim chances for rain and storms to help us beat the heat.

Be sure to take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening hours. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.

To reduce risk during outdoor work...the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Remember, heat stroke is an emergency. And don't forget to check up on relatives and neighbors.
