Erwin Pawn Trade-A-Thon Votes “No” To New Baseball Stadium
Buying, selling, and trading were the buzzwords of the day last Saturday on The Erwin Pawn Trade-A-Thon.
It's want ads on the radio and we do it just for you every Saturday morning at 9. It's pretty simple. We go on the air, shout out the call in number, you call in and tell us what you have to sell or need, give out your phone number, and in theory the greater Amarillo metroplex is blowing up your phone before we get you off the air. We don't take things too seriously and you're invited to participate or just sit back and enjoy the shenanigans.
THE BIG QUESTION
We ask all our callers a poll question before they give their items. It helps us get to know you better and provides a stream of consciousness throughout the show. Sometimes the question is silly, sometimes ludicrous, but always centers around your opinion and thoughts.
Early voting for the November 3rd election is well underway and this election is perhaps the most controversial vote in Amarillo in over ten years. There are plenty of things on the ballot but the issue that has most registered voters mobilizing is the opportunity to cast a vote for or against a baseball stadium being included in the coming Multi-Purpose Event Venue or MPEV.
With early voting underway we thought it was a good time to see how our callers would be voting, should they exercise the right too. Judging by the historical turnout numbers for an off year election most of our callers won't be voting. That's not a knock on them, it simple Amarillo statistics.
Regardless, we wanted to know where you fell on the issue.
Should the Multi-Purpose Event Venue or MPEV include a baseball stadium?
The significantly lopsided vote was somewhat of a surprise. While we expected our callers to mainly vote against the baseball park, we also anticipated baseball to be a little more supported than our informal poll showed. If this is indicative of how the real election is going to turn out things will be pretty interesting. The city has gone on record with the fact there is no backup plan for the MPEV should voters turn down the issue. Of course, the vote is non-binding which basically means one of the back-up plans is potentially ignoring the opinion of voters and building a baseball stadium in the MPEV anyway. Regardless of how the vote goes the MPEV in some form will be built. Let's hope the 90's axiom, "If you build it, they will come" holds true for this significant investment.
Nothing in this world worth anything comes without a set of rules and Trade-A-Thon is no different. The show works fairly simply and isn't hard to decipher. In the name of keeping everyone on the same page we bring you the official rules of conduct on the show at the beginning of each hour. Along with our five standard rules, I always bring you a special Rule #6 that changes every week.
Sometimes the rule is inspired by something that happened to me over the previous week, poor man's observational humor basically. Other times it's plucked from the headlines or from something I saw on the internet.
Earlier in the week my brother posted a status update to Facebook. It was a particularly negative update. He posed the question, "Whats so fun about peace, love, and understanding". He was obviously having a tough day. I responded with what I thought was so great about them and promptly decided it would make a good rule for the show.
Rule #6: Practicing peace, love, and understanding is a lot more fun that carrying the baggage of war, hate, and ignorance.
See you this Saturday for another Erwin Pawn Trade-A-Thon!
