The trend of reevaluating and in some cases removing or changing tributes to the Civil War is alive in Amarillo.

There has been a discussion of possibly renaming Robert E. Lee Elementary.  Those discussions continued last night during an executive session at the weekly Amarillo Independent School District meeting.

While there hasn’t been a movement among parents of students at the school, the NAACP has expressed their feelings regarding the school’s name.  David Lovejoy with the NAACP asserts the name of the school and similar tributes to the Civil War more represent Jim Crow than the War Between the States.

AISD has said no decision to rename the school has been made and has no additional information to provide on the subject at this time.
