The polls were open Saturday.  Turnout was fairly low for the election.  This is good news for people looking to push local issues to a vote.

Of the 104,000 registered voters in Amarillo on 7,235 cast ballots, 6.9%.  This is good news for local petitioners looking to get local issues put to a vote.

Most notoriously the hands-free requirement for cell phones while driving petitioners now will have to seek less signatures to put issues on the ballot.  The threshold now is only 1,800 signatures needed to force an election.

Petitions started before the last election will still need to reach the old threshold.  But nothing is stopping them from starting another petition.
