Amarillo Policeman Who Was Injured In Crash Has Passed Away
Justin Scherlen was 39.
The Amarillo community is mourning the tragic loss of Officer Scherlen. He passed away on Thursday, August 4th, while on vacation with his family.
Sherlen was involved in an accident on September 8th, 2015. He was on patrol and traveling down 34th when a Jeep going the opposite direction crossed the center lane and hit his police car. The jaws of life were used to get Scherlen out of the vehicle after the crash. He sustained injuries to his legs and back that led to several surgeries and extensive rehabilitation.
The driver of the Jeep was not injured.
Scherlen had been a member of the Amarillo Police Department for 12 years. After the crash, he was given a Purple Heart for the injuries he sustained while performing his official duties.
An autopsy will be performed to confirm the cause of death. Currently, it is unknown when or where Officer Scherlen's memorial services will take place.
