Amarillo High beat Canyon in an all-District 3-5A Regional Quarterfinal match on Monday at Tascosa High School.  The Lady Sandies won 25-16, 25-22 and 25-17 to move to the Regional Tournament for the 7th straight year.
Randall started slowly against District foe Hereford but finished very strong to win in four sets in the 5A Regional Quarterfinals Tuesday night in Plainview. The Lady Raiders dropped the opening set 25-23 before rolling to wins in the final three sets.
Bushland also advanced in the 4A playoffs, with a sweep of Seminole. The Lady Falcons won their 40th match of the season and will play in the Regional Tournament in Snyder this weekend.
The news wasn't as good for Highland Park's volleyball team. The Lady Hornets season ended with a four-set loss to Shallowater in the 3A playoffs.
- High school basketball season is underway for local girls teams. Palo Duro won over Tascosa, Amarillo High beat Nazareth 63-34, Caprock girls downed Midland High 51-36, Canyon defeated Coronado 58-21.
- Georgia, Alabama, Notre Dame and Clemson held their spots in the top four of the College Football Playoff rankings, and unbeaten Miami moved up three spots to No. 7 before its showdown with the Fighting Irish.
Oklahoma remained fifth and TCU moved up to sixth in the rankings released Tuesday. The Sooners and Horned Frogs play a key Big 12 game on Saturday, with the winner taking sole possession of first place in the conference.
-- Former Major League pitcher Roy Halladay had a passion for flying airplanes that nearly matched his love of baseball.Halladay died Tuesday when his private plane crashed into the Gulf of Mexico. He was 40 years old.
Halladay was an eight-time All-Star in his 16-year career with the Blue Jays and Phillies. He threw a perfect game with the Phillies during the 2010 season. And on Oct. 6 of that year, against the Cincinnati Reds in the National League Division Series, he became only the second pitcher to throw a postseason no-hitter. He also won two Cy Young Awards during his career.
 - LaMarcus Aldridge scored 25 points, and the San Antonio Spurs made a season-high 15 3-pointers to beat the Los Angeles Clippers 120-107.
Harrison Barnes scored 31 points, rookie Dennis Smith Jr. had 22 and the Dallas Mavericks snapped a six-game losing streak with a 113-99 victory over the Washington Wizards.
- The Houston Texans have signed free agent quarterback Josh Johnson and released Matt McGloin. The moves come a day after coach Bill O'Brien said they had discussed the possibility of adding Colin Kaepernick in the wake of a season-ending knee injury to rookie Deshaun Watson.
