Work On Permanent Plug For Leaking Well

One Year Anniversary Of BP Oil Spill Approaches

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Talos Energy LLC of Houston says it’s working on plans for a permanent cement plug in an inactive well that leaked last week off Louisiana. It says it has not yet resumed production on two active wells on the same platform.

Those were shut in when the leak began during an attempt July 9 to permanently plug the well.

Talos President and CEO Tim Duncan estimates that fewer than 420 gallons of light condensate — a mixture of oil and water — and a small amount of natural gas escaped between July 9 and Thursday, when drilling fluids cut off the flow. He says it all evaporated.

A company statement says a temporary plug sealed the well Saturday. Federal regulators confirmed the seal on Monday.
