Warren Jeffs, head of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (FLDS), was sentenced to life in prison by a Texas jury Tuesday.

Jeffs, who teaches his followers that polygamy brings exhalation in heaven, had been found guilty of sexually assaulting two of his underage “brides.”

During the trial, prosecutors played the jury a tape of Jeffs coercing a 12-year-old girl into sex, and also provided DNA evidence that he fathered a child with another 15-year old.

The charges against the 55-year old stemmed from a 2008 FBI raid on a FLDS compound in El Dorado, Texas.

The FLDS sect, which split from mainstream Mormonism in the late 19th century, is estimated to have 14,000 members. Jeffs’ brother, Lyle, is now rumored to be in charge of the group.
