The major knock on alternative fuels is they don't deliver the on demand power American's expect.  The gap is closing.

A team from Boise State University have converted a stock 1998 Chevy s-10 pickup into a customized veggie oil burning beast.  And they've set the land speed record doing it.

The team noticed the previous speed record for a similarly fueled truck was 98 mph and decided to break what they though would be an easy feat.

It took over two months and after a complete tear down and rebuild of the truck took it out on a Southern California lake bed.

The new record for a vegetable oil fueled vehicle is now at 155.331 mph.

Good luck!
