UPS Trailblazing Executive Christine Owens Retiring After 33 Years

UPS Expects Today To Be Busy Delivery Day

ATLANTA–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Aug 6, 2013–Christine M. Owens, who rose from a part-time position to become a top UPS (NYSE: UPS) executive, today announced she will retire after 33 years with the company. Over the course of her distinguished career, Owens served in key roles, including the first woman region president, a key operational position. She also is a member of the Management Committee, which is comprised of the top executives responsible for the profit and operating plans for the company’s worldwide operations.

Teri P. McClure, the company’s chief legal and compliance officer, will assume the additional responsibility for global communications and brand management at UPS — one of the most trusted and recognized brands in the world.

“Throughout her career, Christine has been a leader,” said Scott Davis, UPS chairman and CEO. “Most recently, she led significant shifts in the way UPS engages with its customers, employees and stakeholders, and she introduced new social and digital platforms. Christine’s deep operational experience and her passion for the business made her counsel insightful and powerful.”

Under Owens’ leadership, UPS developed the award-winning whiteboard campaign and the company’s first global communications platform “We Love Logistics.”

“Christine was responsible for integrating the communications functions and creating a team that delivered bottom-line business results to make our brand and company stronger than ever,” Davis said.

Prior to taking her current role in 2005, Owens spent 25 years in UPS operations where she had responsibility for some of the company’s largest business divisions, including serving as president of UPS’s West and Southeast Regions. She also served as the corporate vice president of transportation, where she directed the coordination, planning, and asset utilization of UPS’s global air and ground operations, the largest integrated transportation network in the world.

Owens began her career in 1979 as a part-time employee in Philadelphia during the holiday season. She spent time as a UPS driver and like many senior UPS executives went into management and continued to progress her career.

A founding supporter of many of UPS’s diversity and sustainability efforts, Owens also is a trustee of The UPS Foundation, UPS’s charitable arm. She also serves on the board of directors of the Women’s Presidents Organization (WPO) and the Corporate Board of Advisors for the National Council of La Raza. WPO and La Raza have both recognized her for her role in helping women and people of color achieve greater economic and business success. Owens will remain on the boards of C&S Wholesale Grocers and WPO.

McClure assumes the role also having served in multiple positions with the company, including president of the Central Florida District, assignments in UPS logistics and distribution, corporate vice president of compliance and various legal roles since joining in 1995. A native of Kansas City, Kansas, McClure received a bachelor’s degree in marketing and economics from Washington University and a law degree from Emory University School of Law.

McClure has been a member of the Management Committee since 2006 serving as senior vice president of legal, audit, compliance and public affairs, as well as general counsel and corporate secretary. McClure has led the coordination of UPS’ ethics and compliance, audit, and legal initiatives in more than 220 countries and territories. She is a strong advocate for the role public policy has in increasing global trade and improving economic growth worldwide.

“Teri’s skills in understanding complex challenges and framing a path forward will be very helpful as we continue to evolve our global communications programs,” Davis said. “Both Teri and Christine are excellent in delivering the right message to the right audience at the right time.”
