1920 — Cleveland second baseman Bill Wambsganss recorded the only triple play — unassisted — in World Series history, as the Indians beat the Brooklyn Robins, 8-1, in Game 5. (More info.)

1924 — Earl McNeely’s base hit in the bottom of the 12th inning of Game 7 gave the Washington Senators a 4-3 victory over the New York Giants and their only World Series title. (More info.)

1964 — Mickey Mantle hit a game-winning home run in the bottom of the ninth inning in Game 3 of the World Series at Yankee Stadium to give New York a 2-1 victory. The long ball was Mantle’s 16th World Series home run, breaking Babe Ruth’s long-standing record. (More info.)

1964 — The Summer Olympics opened in Tokyo, Japan. (More info.)

1976 — Dimitrion Yordanidis, 98, of Greece became the oldest man to compete in a marathon, finishing in 7 hours and 33 minutes. (More info.)
