1947 — Joe DiMaggio of the New York Yankees out-polled Ted Williams of the Boston Red Sox, 202 votes to 201, for the American League’s Most Valuable Player Award even though Williams won his second Triple Crown in the 1947 season. (More info.)

1949 — Steve Van Buren of the Philadelphia Eagles ran for 205 yards in a 34-17 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers at Franklin Field in Philadelphia. (More info.)

1956 — Three days after winning the 100-meter gold, U.S. sprinter Bobby Morrow won the gold medal in the 200 meters at the Summer Olympics in Melbourne, Australia. (More info.)

1965 — Gordie Howe of the Detroit Red Wings scored the 600th goal of his career, the first NHL player to do so, in a 3-2 loss to the Montreal Canadiens. (More info.)

1966 — The Washington Redskins beat the New York Giants, 72-41, in the highest-scoring game in NFL history. (More info.)
