1960 — Elgin Baylor of the Los Angeles Lakers set a then-NBA record by scoring 71 points in a 123-108 win over the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden. (More info.)

1965 — Craig Breedlove, driving the Spirit of America jet-car, set a new land-speed record by surpassing 600 miles per hour on the Bonneville Salt Flats of Utah. (More info.)

1992 — Richard Petty, who raced in NASCAR for 35 years and won a record seven points championships, competed in the final event of his career at the Hooters 500 in Atlanta. (More info.)

1993 — Dr. Tom Amberry, 72, made 2,750 consecutive free throws without a miss at the Rossmoor Athletic Club in Rossmoor, Calif., setting a then-world record. (More info.)
