Here are just some of the notable sports moments that happened on June 14:

1933 — New York Yankees first-baseman Lou Gehrig and manager Joe McCarthy were both thrown out of a game against the Boston Red Sox for arguing. McCarthy was suspended for three games, but Gehrig wasn’t, allowing his consecutive games played streak to continue. (More info.)

1949 — Philadelphia Phillies’ first-baseman Eddie Waitkus was shot in the chest at a Chicago hotel by 19-year-old obsessed fan Ruth Ann Steinhagen. Waitkus recovered to play again; Steinhagen was committed to a mental institution. (More info.)

1952 —  Jim Peters set the world record time for the marathon at 2:20:42.2. (More info.)

1965 — Cincinnati Reds’ pitcher Jim Maloney no-hit the New York Mets, but he lost, 1-0, in 11 innings. (More info.)

1985 — After leaving the team at the end of the 1982 season, Earl Weaver came out of retirement to manage the Baltimore Orioles. (More info.)

1987 — The Los Angeles Lakers beat the Boston Celtics, 4 games to 2, to win the NBA championship. (More info.)

1990 — The Detroit Pistons beat the Portland Trail Blazers, 4 games to 1, to repeat as NBA champions. (More info.)

1992 — The Chicago Bulls beat the Portland Trail Blazers, 4 games to 2, to repeat as NBA champions. (More info.)

1994 — Team captain Mark Messier led the New York Rangers over the Vancouver Canucks, 4 games to 3, to win their first Stanley Cup since 1940. (More info.)

1995 — The Houston Rockets swept the Orlando Magic in four games to repeat as NBA champions. (More info.)

1998 — Michael Jordan won his sixth NBA Finals MVP award, as the Chicago Bulls defeated the Utah Jazz, 4 games to 2, to win their third consecutive NBA championship. (More info.)

2005 — Asafa Powell of Jamaica set a new world record of 9.77 in the Men’s 100 meters in Athens, Greece. (More info.)
