1966 — The New York Mets selected Steve Chilcott with the first overall pick of the MLB Draft,  bypassing Reggie Jackson, who was chosen second by the Athletics. (More info.)

1978 — The Washington Bullets defeated the Seattle SuperSonics in Game 7 of the NBA Finals to win their first, and only, NBA championship. (More info.)

1982 — The New York Mets drafted pitcher Dwight Gooden with the fifth overall pick of the MLB Draft. (More info.)

1986 — Chris McCarron rode Danzig Connection to victory in the Belmont Stakes giving trainer Woody Stephens a fifth straight win at Belmont Park. (More info.)

1989 — NHL star Wayne Gretzky won his ninth Hart (MVP) Trophy in 10 years. (More info.)

1996 — Undefeated Oscar De La Hoya knocked out Julio Cesar Chavez in the fourth round of their World Boxing Council junior welterweight title bout in Las Vegas. (More info.)
