1903 — James Jeffries defeated James J. Corbett in the 10th round of their fight in San Francisco to retain his heavyweight title. (More info.)

1936 — The United States won the first Olympic basketball tournament at the Summer Olympics in Berlin. (More info.)

1959 — The American Football League formed with franchises in Dallas, Houston, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Denver, New York and Los Angeles. Boston, Buffalo and Oakland were later added prior to 1960. (More info.)

1964 — Pitcher Bo Belinsky of the California Angels was suspended after attacking sportswriter Braven Dyer. (More info.)

1977 — Lanny Wadkins won the PGA Championship on the third playoff hole at Pebble Beach in California in the first major tournament played under the sudden-death rule. (More info.)

1982 — Pete Rose of the Philadelphia Phillies recorded his 12,365th career at-bat to pass Henry Aaron and set a new major league record. (More info.)
