The Erwin Pawn Trade-A-Thon Would Evacuate If Amarillo Police Ordered It To

Buyers and sellers come together on Saturdays with help from The Erwin Pawn Trade-A-Thon.

It’s one of the many ways people looking for a good deal find one.  There’s no charge or commission with our classifieds.  They speak for themselves.  The next time you stump your toe on that treadmill you never use, list it for sale on Trade-A-Thon.  But it’s about more than buying, selling, and trading.  That would be positively pedestrian.

We attempt to make our callers answer a poll question before they give their listing.  Some really don’t want to answer and quickly spout off items or phone numbers hoping I will forget to ask them.  Other callers haven’t listened to the show enough to realize there’s a big question. Understandable we’ve been on the air a brief time. Around just eight years.  Either way everyone gets asked The Big Question.

The big question is sometimes topical, other times irreverent, and occasionally controversial.  It helps us get to know our callers better and provides a tie that binds them together.

I, much like everyone else, am looking forward to Labor Day weekend.  It’s the last three day weekend of the summer and I don’t intend to waste it.  My significant other will be in town visiting and I’m greatly anticipating it.  It made me think of you and what big plans you had for the holiday.

Do you have plans for Labor Day Weekend?

Answers included: nothing, don’t know, working, fishing, planting wheat, attending the Boys Ranch Rodeo, watching basketball in Albuquerque, the usual, bowling, cooking out, visiting Clovis, having a shrimp boil, house cleaning, watching the Rangers not have a good season, and having a tea party with the daughter.

However you choose to spend the weekend, do embrace Labor Day.  It’s the most socialist holiday on the capitalist calendar.

Since we have so much trouble getting everyone to understand the concept of The Big Question we felt it important to recite the rules of conduct of the show at the beginning of each hour, hoping to keep every listener and caller properly educated.  Unfortunately, we could read the rules every 15 minutes and still have some less gifted callers try to sell a gun or unsanitized mattress.  Along with the five regular rules of the show, I always bring you a special Rule #6 that changes every week.  It’s usually inspired by something that happened to me over the previous week.

Getting ready for the show Saturday morning, I was watching the news.  As Hurricane Harley approached the coast the evacuation order was given.  Judging from the video I was seeing, a lot of people totally scoffed and decided to ride it out in place.

Today we see the foolishness of staying in an area your government tells you is in imminent threat of endangering your life.  The news today is filled not with evacuation lines but of helicopter rescues, fisherman catching people like fish in bass boats, and victims using makeshift boats hoping to float to higher ground.  That sounds to me like the makings of a good rule.

Rule #6: When the authorities order you to evacuate, leave.  It isn’t a suggestion.

Although Amarillo won’t be hosting a hurricane anytime soon despite Al Gore, the order to evacuate to a safer area could come at any time for a variety or reasons.  Heed the warning.  Help yourself by saving yourself.

If you made it this far into this wrap up of The Erwin Pawn Trade-A-Thon you’re either Shannon, the digital goddess of News Talk 940, a very bored listener, or my mom.

Hey Mom!

See you next Saturday for another Erwin Pawn Trade-A-Thon!
