Texas Senator Chris Harris Asks Immigrant Testifying on Senate Bill #9 To Speak English

Senator Chris Harris, a Republican from Arlington surprised many this week when he interrupted testimony from a Spanish speaking immigrant by asking him to cease using his interpreter and speak English.

The man has been in America since 1988 and speaks broken English.  He didn’t want to testify in English and opted to use an interpreter.

The incident happened during testimony on Senate Bill 9.  It would allow law enforcement to check a suspects immigrant status.  The bill passed the Senate and will be voted on in the House in the next few days.
