A particularly strong species of lice has spread across the U.S. and found its way to Texas.

A strain of lice known as "super lice" is becoming immune to over-the-counter scalp treatments. These lice have been terrorizing scalps in 25 states, including Texas.

A new treatment has been developed by Lice Clinics of America to kill the stronger lice. However, it costs around $170 per treatment.

Currently, Amarillo ISD has a policy that children should not miss school if they have lice. Lice is not considered contagious by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

Experts are encouraging parents to teach their children not to share hats, brushes, combs, or touch other children's hair. Because the lice have developed an immunity to treatments, prevention is the best solution.

Lice can not survive away from the scalp, so once they have been removed, a simple cleaning of sheets, pillow cases, and areas where hair may have fallen will suffice.
