Seattle Girl Receives New Kidney for Halloween

Many kids across the United States spent their Halloween dressed up in scary costumes while running around collecting as much candy as possible from their neighbors. Two-year-old Evelyn Sherman, however, spent her Halloween receiving the greatest treat of all: a new kidney and a new life.

Last night at the Seattle Children’s Hospital, Evelyn’s father, Keith Sherman, donated his kidney to his daughter. Prior to the surgery, he said, “I’m excited to do this. It’s a long time coming.”

Evelyn’s mother, Julianne, says she is excited that her daughter will have a new chance at normalcy. “She’s never really eaten a meal and enjoyed it, because her kidney disease does something weird with her appetite,” she said. “I can’t wait to see her sit down and enjoy a full meal with us.”

The Sherman family witnessed a huge outpouring of support for their daughter with a campaign called “Trick or Treat for Transplant,” which community members hope will raise upwards of $100,000 to help pay for some of the medical bills. “Transplants are astronomically expensive. I’ve read it can cost $500,000 for the transplant and ongoing medical costs,” said Tarah Voss, a friend of the family.
