The first quarter of last night’s District 3-5A football game belonged to Plainview but the last three quarters belonged to Amarillo High.

The Sandies fell behind 10-0 to the Bulldogs before waking up and rolling to a 42-18 win.

Quarterback Nathan Betts scored on a 60-yard run and threw a 74-yard scoring pass to Rhett Maynard, who also had a 74-yard touchdown run.

The win gives Amarillo High a 4-0 district record and keeps them in first place.

Tonight in 3-5A, Randall is at Hereford, Caprock hosts Dumas, Palo Duro is at Canyon.

The top matchup in 2-6A is Tascosa at undefeated Odessa Permian. That’s the game of the week here on KIXZ with pregame coverage beginning at 7 p.m. and kickoff at 7:30 p.m.

In other games, Bushland hosts Dalhart, River Road is at Muleshoe, and Highland Park is at Canadian.

- In the NFL last night, it was a wild one between the Raiders and Chiefs.  Oakland ended up winning 31-30 and hand Kansas City its second straight loss.

The Raiders scored two apparent game-winning touchdowns that didn't count. The Chiefs forced incompletions on back-to-back plays that ended with no time on the clock only to have the game extended by penalties.

Derek Carr shook off the two overturned touchdown passes to connect for the winner to Michael Crabtree after the game was extended by two defensive holding penalties, and the Raiders snapped a four-game losing streak.

- Enrique Hernandez homered three times and drove in a record seven runs, Clayton Kershaw breezed through six solid innings and Los Angeles ended the Chicago Cubs' title defense with an 11-1 rout in Game 5 of the National League Championship Series.

- The Astros must win Justin Verlander's ninth start tonight, or the New York Yankees will take the American League pennant in Houston. Verlander has won all eight games he has pitched for the Astros since agreeing to a last-second trade with hopes of a World Series. They had a 2-0 lead in the best-of-7 AL Championship Series after his complete game in Game 2. But the Yankees won all three games in the Bronx and return to Minute Maid Park with a chance to close out the series in Game 6.

- The West Texas A&M men's soccer team beat Lubbock Christian University 4-0 in Heartland Conference action on Thursday to start a busy weekend for WT teams.

The women's soccer team is at Texas A&M-Commerce.  The volleyball team is also on the road tonight at Midwestern State.  That's also where the Buffaloes football team plays tomorrow night against 5th ranked Midwestern State.
