New Sentence For Woman Convicted In Dad’s Death

PORT HURON, Mich. (AP) — A young woman convicted of plotting a fatal attack on her father is returning to court to ask a judge to consider a sentence that could lead to parole.

Tia Skinner was given a no-parole sentence in 2011 when she was convicted of first-degree murder in St. Clair County. But she's getting another day in court Thursday after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down mandatory no-parole punishments for teenagers.

Skinner is 20 but she was 17 when two men attacked and killed her father, Paul Skinner, in their Yale home, 85 miles northeast of Detroit. Her mother was seriously wounded. Skinner insists she didn't want her parents dead.

She still could get a life sentence. But the former honors student is expected to ask for a shot at freedom.
