The small town is a common stop between Amarillo and Dallas.

Memphis is located about 90 miles southeast of Amarillo on Highway 287. The population is just over 2,000 people, but it wasn't the heavy traffic that led city officials to make an update to one of the main roads.

According to Memphis residents, there have been situations where emergency vehicles were stuck at the railroad tracks on the way to an accident on 287. To allow EMS access to the highway, the city decided to build an overpass over the train tracks.

They are also hoping that the overpass will offer a safer way to get across the tracks. Instead of waiting close to the tracks or crossing at a dangerous time, walkers and bikers will be able to use the overpass.

This project was first brought to TxDOT in 2000, began in 2015, and finally completed on Monday, July 25th, 2016.
