Amarillo Man Sentenced To 8 Years In Prison For Indecency
Nelson Walter Myers was sentenced by a Potter County Judge to 8 years in prison after a jury found him guilty for the crime of indecency with a child. Myers must serve at least half of that sentence before being eligible for parole.
The indictment stated that in 2006, Myers caused a 4-year old girl do touch him improperly. Before being sentenced, Myers testified that depression caused him to self-medicate with alcohol in order to cope. Myers served in the NAVY in the 80′s and voluntarily sought treatment for depression from the Department of Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center.
Myers claims he is innocent of the charge and would not agree to voluntary probation as he would most likely be forced to attend sex offender classes.
“I will not sit in those classes and listen to what those men did to their kids,” Myers said.
After sentencing a family member of the victim stated that she did not hate Myers, but he tried to maintain his innocence even after the jury found him guilty.
“For you to not take responsibility is really, really sad,” she said.
