Local Sports Headlines – Lady Buffs Roll Into Elite Eight

For the third time in four years, the West Texas A&M women’s basketball team will be heading to the Elite Eight after an 86-64 victory over Angelo State in the South Central Region Championship game Monday night in Pueblo, Colorado.

The Lady Buffs went into the Regional seeded fourth but emerged as the champion by dominating No. 2-seed Angelo State. The Lady Buffs shot 51.7 percent for the game and hit nine of 17 three-pointers and went 17 of 19 from the free throw line. Five WT players scored in double figures, led by 16 points from junior Sydney Walton who earned a spot on the All-South Central Region Tournament team. Senior Sasha Watson added 14 points along with six assists and three steals and was named the Most Outstanding Player in the tournament.

The 26-8 Lady Buffs will move on to the Elite Eight next week in Columbus, Ohio, on the campus of Ohio Dominican University.

– Tonight, the WT men’s team tries to punch its ticket to the Elite Eight as the Buffaloes meet 11th ranked Colorado Mines in the South Central
Region championship. Mines is riding a 12-game win streak with an overall record of 29-4 after claiming the RMAC Regular Season and Tournament
Titles.

Gametime is 8 p.m. central time with live coverage on 98.7 JACK-FM.

– West Texas A&M junior guard David Chavlovich has been named to the Division II Conference Commissioner’s Association All-South Central Region 1st Team for the second straight season. The guard now moves on the D2-CCA ballot to become an All-American.

– After a sweep of 10th ranked Texas A&M-Kingsville last weekend, two WT baseball were honored by the league with weekly awards.

Senior Joshua Payne is the Lone Star Conference Pitcher of the Week after tossing a complete-game shutout for a 7-0 win Saturday, allowing two
hits, one walk and a career-high 16 strikeouts in nine innings.

Buffs junior Adam Adkins is the LSC Hitter of the Week after he hit .467 in the series against TAMUK. Adkins had seven hits in 15 at bats and led
the team with seven runs scored, with four doubles, one triple and six RBI.

– The NCAA Women’s Tournament field has been announced. Baylor, UConn, South Carolina and Notre Dame landed No. 1 seeds.

– Former Dallas Cowboys and Denver Broncos star DeMarcus Ware has called it a career. Ware tweeted yesterday, “After a lot of thought and prayer, I’ve decided to accept the unknown and retire from my NFL career”. He went on to say, “Long-term health and quality of life outweigh the spark and passion to play that I once had.”

– In the NBA, the Dallas Mavericks lost to Toronto 100-78. San Antonio beat Atlanta 107-99.
