Kiribati Considers Moving Their Entire Population To Fiji Over Fears Of Rising Ocean Levels
While the ocean levels have not risen significantly (or even measurably at all), the population of Kiribati is considering 'picking up and movin'.
They have stated that it's not as much about the rising water level, but the tainting of their ground water systems and the increased frequency of severe storms. But they have also added that 'climate change' (global warming) will cause them to lose the island eventually anyway.
"We would hope not to put everyone on one piece of land, but if it became absolutely necessary, yes, we could do it," Tong said. "It wouldn't be for me, personally, but would apply more to a younger generation. For them, moving won't be a matter of choice. It's basically going to be a matter of survival."
Some villages have already moved off of the island and expects it to be more of an issue for the younger generation than the established village and families today.
Here is a map showing the location of the tiny island.
