Jury Hears Closing Arguments in Georgia Slayings Trial

BRUNSWICK, Ga. (AP) — Jurors are hearing attorneys' closing arguments in the trial of a Georgia man charged with clubbing his father and seven extended family members to death inside their mobile home four years ago.

Defense attorney Newell Hamilton Jr. asked the jury Wednesday to acquit 26-year-old Guy Heinze Jr. of Brunswick. He said waffling by prosecutors on whether they believe Heinze committed all eight killings by himself — something police have said for four years — shows that authorities "still don't know what happened."

Hamilton also said the motive given by police that Heinze killed the victims Aug. 29, 2009, over a bottle of prescription painkillers makes little sense.

Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for Heinze. They are scheduled to make their closing argument Wednesday after the defense finishes.
