HOUSTON (AP) — Law officers in Houston who answered a call about a kidnapping have detained at least 30 suspected illegal immigrants found at an apparent stash house.

Houston police and federal agents early Thursday responded to a call from the parents of a woman allegedly smuggled across the border with Mexico.

Police spokesman Chris Hassig says the relatives agreed to pay a certain sum for the transfer but then the smugglers demanded more cash and threatened to hurt the woman. The family then called police.

Further information wasn't immediately available on whether any suspected smugglers were caught. Houston police say one man suffered minor injuries when he attacked an officer while trying to flee.

Immigration officials will work to determine the identities and homelands of the detainees.
