The cold weather is especially hard on the homeless population in Amarillo.

Homeless shelters in the city see an uptick in population during times of severe weather and extreme cold.

The Salvation Army says they have seen an increase of about 15% because of the cold conditions.  The Salvation Army has 240 beds but can accommodate more during extreme weather events.  If the temperature falls below 38 degrees they have an additional cots they can put out to meet the overflow.

Another Chance House is a men's shelter that offers long term and emergency housing.  They have 18 homes that house 69 men but currently are full.  They are unable to accommodate more.
