If you’re anything like us, you probably assume that fast food is cheaper than home-cooked meals. But, as this infographic going around Facebook shows, nothing could be further from the truth.

In fact, a typical meal for a family of four at McDonald’s — two Big Macs, a cheeseburger, chicken McNuggets, four fries and four sodas — totals nearly $28. But a homemade meal of roasted chicken, potatoes, salad and milk, which could feed a family of 4-6 people, comes to roughly $14. As an even cheaper alternative, a simple meal of rice and canned beans with bacon, green peppers and onions comes to less than $10.

Some critics have argued that fast food is cheaper when measured by calorie. But when you consider that many Americans already consume too many calories on a daily basis, this argument tends to fall apart.

What do you think? Does this infographic inspire you to cook more at home?
