Hansford Man Sentenced For Attempted Murder Of Deputies

Justin Szalla, 20 of Springfield, MO. pled quilty of two counts of Attempted Capital Murder of two Hansford County deputies.

IN October of 2013 a Hansford County deputy stopped to provide assistance to a vehicle stopped alongside a rural roadway. The deputy discovered the car was stolen.  The pair on the vehicle were placed in the back of the Sheriff’s truck.

While in the back of the sheriff’s pickup, Szalla retrieved the deputy’s rifle and began firing at the two deputies who took cover.  Approximately 20 rounds were fired between the three shooters.

Szalla’s rifle jammed and he fled on foot. A third responding officer saw him a placed him into custody.
