A spokesman for Arizona Representative Gabrielle Giffords, who was severely injured in a shooting spree earlier this year, said Giffords’ husband, Mark Kelly, was scheduled to fly in the Reno air show on Friday — the same day a plane at that event crashed into the crowd of spectators and killed 10 people.

Kelly, an astronaut, was set to fly aerobatics in a P-51 Mustang, the same model as the World War II-era fighter plane that many believe experienced mechanical failure before nosediving into the stands.

The tragic accident caused the cancellation of the rest of the weekend-long event, so Kelly never took to the skies as planned.

National Transportation Safety Board officials are currently in Reno, assisting local officials as they try to figure out the cause of Friday’s crash.
