Given the proliferation of social media over the last four years, 2012 should be the social media election.

So how much of our political information gathering and political discourse are actually taking place on sites like Facebook and Twitter?

According to a new survey from the Pew Internet and American Life project maybe not as much as you would think. The poll of 2,253 adults found that only 36 percent classify social media is a “very” or “somewhat” important place to get political news and only 25 percent believe it is an effective venue for political debate.

Democrats are more likely to think social media is a good place for politics than Republicans.
