We've all been behind a couple of hot rods at a light set to race when the traffic light turns green.

Street racing incidents run the gamut from being simply annoying to tragically deadly and Amarillo police are making it a point of focus.

The APD reminds potential and past illegal street races there is a drag strip open outside the city limits where enthusiasts can drag race legally.   The Amarillo Dragway has a quarter mile track and will be hosting races Friday August 26th and Saturday August 27th and will be open to the public from 3pm to midnight.

For now, police are looking closely to catch racers in the act.

The Amarillo police have deployed marked and unmarked patrol cars to catch racers.  They are also increasing their weekend patrols in areas popular with illegal street racers.

Anyone caught street racing can find themselves spending up to 180 days in jail and up to a $2,000 fine.
